It is....something that the Covenant Remnant uses to mine materials and artifacts for their use.
It is controlled by the Lekgolo worms and is often used as a Yan'mee hive.

A/N Quite frankly it dosen't look Covenant, more organic. Maybe it is what a Scarab is supposed to look like before The Covenant reversed-engineered it.

It's best to assume that this...thing... may have been a creature before it's insides were ripped out, roasted, and eaten. And then the corpse 'reanimated' by Covenant tech and Lekgolo to dig. Probably one of the more 'modern' Scarab variants as it is probably a LOT bigger.
